“Rest and self-care are so important. When you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to serve others from the overflow. You cannot serve from an empty vessel.” — Eleanor Brown

It’s pretty much a cliché at this point but the world is moving faster every day. And while this fast pace has certainly produced a lot of impressive things particularly in the realm of science and technology, this pace has also produced a more stressful lifestyle. In fact, the adverse effects of stress are quite well known.

Fortunately, the solution to maintaining your well-being is to simply slow down and recharge yourself by indulging in a little self-care. This need for a little bit of me time is no doubt what encouraged a lot of women – and probably even some men – to observe a self-care Sunday. Below are ten ideas in no particular order for making self-care Sunday both meaningful and effective.

1. Unplug Yourself.

No doubt, your smartphone is one of those previously mentioned awesome things our high-tech world has given us. This device has made it much easier for people to stay connected with one another, whether via phone networks, or the various messaging platforms now available. While this is not a bad thing at all, a constantly beeping phone is not exactly welcome if you’ve set aside a Sunday to yourself. Unplugging yourself from your smartphone and everything that comes with it – including social media, nosy co-workers, and your boss – is an important step in slowing your day down. That being said, just make sure you have all your bases covered at work!

    2. Catch Up on Your Reading.

This goes hand in hand with unplugging yourself from all things digital. After all, there’s nothing as analog as printed words on paper! And what better time to finish that book you started than on self-care Sunday? Even if you’re not a huge reader, you’ll soon find out that reading through even an article in a magazine can do wonders for calming your nerves. Try to avoid the news though; you can deal with that on Monday!

    3. Revisit an Old Hobby.

Maintaining a hobby or a leisure activity has loads of benefits, both physical and mental. If you’ve ever had a hobby that you haven’t done in a while, self-care Sunday is certainly a good time to revisit it. And if you don’t have a hobby, why not start getting into one? It doesn’t have to something complicated, like learning how to create metal sculptures! Cooking at home is great hobby to get into, and something that ties-in nicely to the next tip.

    4. Eat a Well-Prepared Meal.

Due to the daily grind, a lot of times we seldom get the chance to eat a healthy meal. Instead we make do with fast-food burgers, cup ramen noodles, or other less than healthy food options. If this is something you do regularly, it’s a good idea to eat something prepared from scratch for a change. Not only is a home cooked meal healthier, there’s something quite relaxing about cooking that actually makes it a great stress-relieving hobby.

    5. Pamper Yourself with a Beauty Treatment.

Sometimes you need to look good to feel good, and very few things make you look good other than a beauty treatment. This could be something as simple as a rejuvenating soak in the tub, or a visit to a salon. When pampering yourself, it’s a good idea to have something to show for it. Having a visible reminder of how you pampered yourself can work as a reminder to keep self-care Sunday going. In this instance, you could give yourself a manicure, or a pedicure. If you haven’t had a dip powder or a gel manicure, this self-care day is certainly as good a time as any to get one. Not only is there a Zen element to the whole dip powder or gel manicure process, these types of mani last much longer than regular nail polish.

    6. Get a Massage.

Just like pampering yourself with a beauty treatment, a massage can do wonders in making you feel good both physically and mentally. The great thing about a massage is there are so many styles to choose from, each with its own benefits. This being the case, it’s a good idea to do a bit of research so you find what’s right for you.

    7. Meditate.

One of the goals of self-care Sunday is to achieve a calm and relaxed state, something you can easily achieve through meditation. In this instance, meditation can simply mean going to a quiet place in your mind. This could be a great time to take stock of your life up to that moment and achieve a state of gratitude for what you have. After all, if you have the chance to do a self-care Sunday, you're probably luckier than most people.

    8. Take a Trip to A Quiet Place.

Staying still in one place is not everyone’s idea of relaxing. For some people, going on a trip can be a real de-stressor. Treat yourself to a quick trip out of town to some place quiet and relaxing. Be sure to plan your trip out though. Sure, a spur of the moment trip can be great, but it’s best to have a plan, however rudimentary. This is to ensure you don’t find yourself in a situation you can’t get out of.

    9. Get Some Vitamin Sea.

In other words, take a trip to the beach. Alright, admittedly going to the beach is a bit more involved an endeavor than simply hopping into your car and taking a drive to the suburbs. However, the sand and salt water can do wonders in rejuvenating your spirits. And as previously mentioned, plan your trip properly.

    10. Spend Some Time with Loved Ones.

Perhaps the most important form of self-care is to spend some quality time with the ones you love. Whether you’re single or married, having a bit of fun time with the people most important in your life does wonders in restoring your soul. In fact, everything previously mentioned becomes better when done with a loved one or a friend.

While it may seem that self-care Sunday is simply an exercise in being self-centered, the practice is much more than that. As the quote at the beginning of this article is trying to say, you cannot be there for the people you care about if you’re burned out. Additionally, taking time out to take care of yourself can  – and will – get you ready to take on the new week with a new sense of purpose.
