How to DIY a Professional Dip Powder Manicure

Even though dip powder nails are pretty easy to DIY since all you're doing is dipping your nails into the powder and brushing away the excess, there is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to using an at home kit. Keep reading to find out our best tips on how to nail a DIY dip powder manicure!

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Dip Powder in your choice of colour
  • 1 Base Coat
  • 1 Activator
  • 1 Top Coat
  • Nail Buffer
  • Nail File

    STEP 1

Before anything else, start your manicure by prepping the nails. Push back and trim your cuticles but avoid using cuticle oils, this will prevent the powder from applying.

    STEP 2

Next, with a nail buffer, gently remove shine from the surface of the natural nail.  This will make the manicure stick to your nails much better. Use a lint free wipe soaked in alcohol and swipe the nails clean from any dust.

TIP: Avoid touching your fingertips to your nail beds after you've buffed them, as excessive touching can transfer oil back on to your nails.

    STEP 3

Get your nails into the shape you want. Just be sure to file in one direction only. For the shape of your nails, you could go round, square, almond, coffin; it’s really up to you.

    STEP 4
Apply Rossi Base Coat to the ¾ of the nail and immediately dip into Glam Powder of your choice. Keep your layers thin. This will keep your nails looking natural while still allowing you to do at least three layers

TIP: To ensure even application, hold the brush parallel to the nail, moving it from the cuticle to the free edge in long strokes.

    STEP 5

Quickly dip into Glam Powder at a 45-degree angle to ensure a smooth powder surface. Clean the surface with a fluffy brush after dipping.

TIP: Dip powders tend to separate over time, so make sure you shake and roll the jars before use.

    STEP 6

Apply another layer of Rossi Base Coat this time hairline away from the cuticle and dip into powder one nail at the time.

TIP: Great tip is to run a toothpick or orange stick along the cuticle for a clean line. Do that before the base coat dries.

    STEP 7

Once you have dipped them and brushed off the excess powder apply one coat of the activator and let it air dry 1 min.

Once your nails are dry, file, shape & buff to smooth the nail surface. Wash hands and nails or use a lint free cloth to wipe the nail surface with alcohol. Then apply another coat of ACTIVATOR and allow them to dry.

TIP: Activator is used to harden the powder and seal in colour, but don’t overdo it. Be sure to cover the edges and cap off the tips of the nails.

    STEP 8

Once you’re done with the buffing, wipe away any dust and apply two layers of the top coat. Use quick strokes. Allow the first layer to dry for about 2 minutes before applying the second coat.

    STEP 9

Finally, apply a liberal amount of cuticle oil and you’re done! With the constant hand washing and sanitizing, be sure to continue applying the cuticle oil over the days to come to keep your cuticles moisturized.

Remember that practice helps! The more you work with this product, the more you will become comfortable with it. Happy dipping, Rossi Babes!
